Quite possibly the most insultingly stupid movie you will ever see. That’s saying a lot, but Whipped earns this title through sheer, jaw-dropping narcissism. Writer/director/producer Peter M. Cohen aspires to make a witty and insightful comedy about the battle of the sexes and instead wallows in soggy cliches. Three friends meet every Sunday morning at a diner to discuss the weekend’s “exploits.” Two fancy themselves to be master scam artists, the other is a compulsive masturbator. All three meet and fall in love with the same woman, Mia (Amanda Peet, The Whole Nine Yards). The truth is swiftly discovered, but none of them want to give her up, so she dates them all while their friendship crumbles. The plot occasionally stops so that one of the characters can talk to the camera and espouse supposed scamster philosophies, and there are “hilarious” slapstick episodes, like when one of them drops Mia’s vibrator down the toilet and spatters himself with urine trying to retrieve it. The dialogu is idiotic, the actors are charmless, the situations are labored beyond belief–and the filmmaker adores all of it, dwelling lovingly on every inane moment. Ghastly. The dialogu is laughable, and the plot is by the numbers. But if you’re a surfer (or an armchair surfer), this ultra-silly movie may prove hard to resist. It’s the one about the kid from Arizona (Matt Adler), who’s surfed only on artificial waves in that landlocked state, coming out to spend his last free summer hitting the serious water of Hawaii. He falls in with a mystical surf guru (Gregory Harrison), one of those surf-Zen masters obsessed with the cosmic significance of hanging ten, but he’s also tempted by the flashier stunts of the younger surf crowd. Oh, and the Arizona kid also gets romantic with the prettiest girl on Oahu (Nia Peeples), which precipitates trouble with her resentful native family. If the story’s no winner, the surfing action is excellent, with many real-life surfers contributing their talents. For shredders, a guilty pleasure. –Robert Horton

Ten years and six films (most released straight to video) have made these plucky dinosaurs favorites among the younger set. This new adventure is, well, pretty much like all the others. Littlefoot hears the story of a legendary dinosaur that defended the land years before and is praised by the mysterious land form known as Saurus Rock. When a strange brontosaurus named Doc wanders through town, Littlefoot is convinced he is the legend. Same old fare: earthshakes, mean old “sharptooths” (T-Rexes), lots of screaming, and a lesson learned. Only three songs. The biggest surprise is Kris Kristofferson as the voice of Doc. –Doug Thomas

A lovely introduction to a 40-plus-years-old television tradition, This Is Coronation Street includes a highly entertaining, 75-minute documentary about Coronation Street, the long-running British drama, followed by the series’ first five, black-and-white episodes out of 1960. The former gathers the show’s creators, original stars, and other luminaries to discuss Coronation Street’s deep and sustained impact on pop culture, its early and realistic reflections of northern English society, and the ways in which the series’ penetration of class barriers set the stage for so-called kitchen sink dramas (e.g., Saturday Night and Sunday Morning) in British cinema. All very interesting, but seeing the first live-broadcast shows themselves is a real eye-opener. Written with remarkable fluidity and strengthened by textured dialogu and seamless performances, Coronation Street today looks not only like a prototype for London’s nastier evening soap, Eastenders, but such gritty ensemble American programs from the ’70s as Hill Street Blus. –Tom Keogh
